Offseason moves after day 2 of Free Agency

July 3, 2012

With the NBA Draft wrapped up and the free agency market open its time for the other 29 teams to fill in the pieces to compete with the Miami Heat next season. The Draft gave every team a look at their future and what they can build around and now free agency where you try to get immediate impact on a roster you feel is near complete or in the rebuilding stage. We have seen a few early moves already and a few verbal agreements as well. Some of the moves and offers we saw on day one were as follows.

  • Gerald Wallace sings a 4 year- $40 million dollar deal to remain with the Brooklyn Nets
  • Roy Hibbert verbally agrees to sign a 4 year- $58.4 million dollar deal to go from the Eastern Conference to the Western Conference
  • Kevin Garnett inks a 3 year- $34 million dollar deal to remain with the Boston Celtics for his 7th season
  • Bulls backup Center Omar Asik verbally agrees to a 3 year- $25.1 million dollar deal to become a Houston Rocket
  • Andre Miller agreed to stay in Denver for 3 years
  • Young Lavoy Allen will remain in Philadelphia for 2 years- $6 million

Day one brought us a few big deals for the future of a few of these teams. The Nets may have helped Deron Williams return to Brooklyn by signing Gerald Wallace to a multi-year deal. Roy Hibbert leaving the Pacers will leave a big void in the middle of the paint for a Pacers squad that relied heavily on his inside presence. Kevin Garnett in Boston was a no-brainer if he decided not to retire.

Day two brought us another wild day of free agency as it wraps up for the day. We saw a massive blockbuster deal for the Atlanta Hawks to clear up future cap space for their roster. We also saw some smaller moves today that will benefit some teams very greatly this coming season.

  • Pacers George Hill agreed to a 5 year deal to remain a Indiana Pacer
  • Cavaliers released guard Manny Harris
  • Nets traded Anthony Morrow, Jordan Farmar, Jordan Williams, Johan Petro, DeShawn Stevenson and a 1st round pick for Joe Johnson of the Atlanta Hawks
  • The Jazz will send Devin Harris to Atlanta for Marvin Williams

After another wild day in free agency we saw Brooklyn lock up one of the better scoring guards in the league and try to get more to convince Deron Williams to return to Brooklyn for the 2012-13 season. The Dwight Howard drama in Orlando continues to heat up with Dwights list changing on a daily basis but the Nets remain at the top. Now its time to wait for day 3 moves in this offseason.
